Biography

Sonia “Sunny” Delgado was born February 17, 1981, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her family later relocated to Baltimore, where she grew up with two very different but complementary influences: a mother who worked as a nurse and taught her compassion, and a father whose work as an electrician encouraged her natural fascination with how things fit together and function.

That combination of curiosity and empathy eventually led Sunny toward medicine. She earned her undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras before attending the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Rather than pursuing a traditional clinical practice, Sunny found herself drawn to forensic pathology—the intersection of medicine, investigation, and the careful reconstruction of events that could no longer be explained by the patient.

After completing her medical training and a forensic pathology fellowship at the University of Virginia, Sunny built her career examining deaths with the precision that would eventually become her professional trademark. She developed particular expertise in forensic pathology and trauma-pattern analysis, learning to separate what evidence could establish from what investigators might merely suspect.

Today, Sunny serves as Chief Medical Examiner at the Advanced Medical Investigation Center in Falcon Hollow. She lives outside town in the unincorporated area of Falcon County, maintaining some welcome distance between her professional world and the home she shares with her daughter, Isabella.

Sunny's polished appearance and controlled demeanor can make her seem intimidating to people meeting her for the first time. Her black hair is usually pulled neatly away from her face while she works, and even in an autopsy suite she carries herself with the composure of someone who rarely allows circumstances to dictate her behavior. Those who know her better discover the dry humor underneath, particularly in the easy verbal sparring she shares with Detective Duke Mantz.

For Sunny, however, forensic pathology has never been simply about determining how someone died. Every examination represents a person who can no longer explain what happened to them. Her responsibility is to follow the evidence wherever it leads, distinguish fact from assumption, and make certain the dead are given one final opportunity to tell the truth.
