Biography
Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Lara Zavala developed an interest in medicine during her school years. Drawn to the sciences and the opportunity to help people during difficult circumstances, she pursued undergraduate studies before entering the Medical College of Virginia, where she earned her medical degree in 1993. Lara subsequently completed a three-year residency in emergency medicine, developing the clinical judgment, practical skills, and ability to remain composed under pressure that would define her career. In the summer of 1996, she began working as an attending emergency physician at Falcon Hollow Medical Center.
Lara's early years in Falcon Hollow introduced her to the demanding realities of emergency medicine in a small community. Her responsibilities ranged from treating everyday injuries and illnesses to managing critical emergencies where outcomes were uncertain. In July 1996, she was among the physicians involved in the aftermath of the Falcon Lake incident that claimed the life of Robert Mantz, delivering the devastating news to his wife, Eileen, and their fourteen-year-old son, Travis. Experiences such as these reinforced Lara's understanding that emergency medicine required compassion and clear communication alongside clinical expertise.
As her career progressed, Lara became increasingly involved in supervising medical personnel, coordinating patient care, and improving departmental procedures. Her organizational abilities and willingness to work alongside colleagues earned her the respect of hospital staff. She eventually advanced to Emergency Department Director, assuming responsibility for staffing, clinical readiness, departmental operations, and maintaining the standards of care expected at Falcon Hollow Medical Center. Despite her administrative responsibilities, she retained her clinical credentials and continued treating patients whenever circumstances required additional medical support.
Today, Lara remains a familiar and respected presence at Falcon Hollow Medical Center. She works closely with emergency physicians, nursing staff, and local emergency responders to ensure patients receive timely, appropriate treatment. Confident without being overbearing, she believes effective leadership depends on preparation, communication, and setting an example for those around her. After three decades serving the Falcon Hollow community, Lara understands that even the most experienced physician cannot control every outcome. What matters most to her is that every patient receives competent, compassionate care and that her department remains ready when the next emergency arrives.
